- This paper seeks to contribute to discussion of ‘the evolving nature of the nation state’ in Indonesia. The following paper concentrates on relations between the gateway territories of West Bali and East Java that are divided by the Bali Strait. The focus is on West Bali as a peripheral yet strategic place in Bali, and how a Bugis presence there has shaped its history.
